2005
ICRSSL 2nd Division
Champions!
|
In 2005, FM United joined the ICRSSL with players that barely knew each other at the beginning of the season. A group of guys was quickly assembled and, following a few practices in early Spring, the team was ready for the challenge of a demanding schedule. On June 1st, FMU played their first official game against Mississauga Stingers and the result was a convincing 4-1 win. However, a series of three straight losses in June (Horvath, Inter A Mars and Meteor) saw our position compromised and sitting at the bottom of the table. FMU eventually returned to their winning ways, and a string of five straight victories propelled our record to 8-5 at the end of 13 league games. And so, we went into our 14th and final game of the season on 24 points, needing a tie or a win to clinch a championship in our first year. On May 18th, 2005, the stage was set. It just so happened that our last match would be against Milton Gunners, who, at 22 points still had the chance to win the league. All they had to do was win the match. Gunners were the home team, and it had rained all day leading up to kick-off time. With only 9 players starting the game for FMU, we didn’t actually feel doomed. On the contrary, this was a great reason to feel even more united and fight adversity while shorthanded. Our game plan was to hold on as tight as possible, until an additional player arrived. We actually managed to score a goal twenty minutes into the game in a quick counter-attack and defended that goal with tooth and nails. The rain did not stop, and it fell hard at times, but the score suffered no change in the first half. FMU started the second half with an additional player (our tenth), as Gunners continued an onslaught towards our defensive zone, in search of the equalizer. However, and against a barrage of Milton attacks, we made it 2-0 on another quick counter-attack, and that second goal really put a damper on Gunners’ players. The game was now into the last 15 minutes and MJ, on the 85th minute, rested the issue with a nice individual effort. Final score: FMU 3 – Milton Gunners 0. FM United were 2005 ICRSSL 2nd Division Champions, with a 9-5 overall record. |
